Course Aims
You will explore and experience the wonder of Raku. By the end of the course you will have developed projects that will be fired using Glazes in the Raku kilns.
Entry Requirements
For those with basic hand-building knowledge and no other crafts qualifications who wish to develop new skills.

Course Content
This course aims to develop your Raku hand building skills and firing knowledge.
Week 1 – You will be shown the studio and equipment. Be given a Health and Safety induction and an introduction to the wonder of Raku and also make a pinch pot.
Week 2 – You will learn how to create a simple clay form using the equipment safely. You will have discussions on techniques and Raku history.
Week 3 – You will create a hand – built ceramics piece.
Week 4 – Completing your project with refinement and decoration.
Week 5 – You will learn how to apply a range of Raku glazes and learn about the theory of Raku firing. Including how to clean up your work.
Week 6 – Raku Day. This is an outdoor session, for this you will need outdoor boots or shoes. Hair will need to be tied back and no trailing clothing. Project completion, cleaning and final finishes.
Assessment Method
Assessment is carried out through observation, finished product and portfolio evidence.
