This course is aimed at intermediate level potters who are ready for the next challenge. It offers side progression of creative industry skills and develops an awareness of one’s artistic process. This award leads you through the importance and value of sketchbook development aiming to build your confidence through practical achievement and heightened critical thinking. You will also experiment with decorating slips, stains and glazes, as part of your creative journey allowing one to gain knowledge and experience of the alchemy of firing work in the kiln. You will be supported though classroom based practical teaching as well as google classroom access allowing you to access your coursework at any time.
To have an awareness of basic clay skills and techniques as well as basic IT skills allowing you to access and use google classroom and research artists online

This qualification requires you to outline a plan for your chosen project through the extensive use of sketch booking design ideas, personal research and creative flow throughout the four key stages of project development. You will need to be able to outline studio/work room safety rules as well as identifying health and safety measures as your project develops and identify and evaluate the equipment and materials that will help you to achieve your design dreams. You will be introduced to innovative ways of using ceramic materials in your creative practise through this qualification, developing an understanding of the additional adjustments that innovative approaches may require. Through this qualification we aim to expand your skills/gain key clay handling tips and new and ideas for feed into your own creative practise.
This course is designed to introduce new and creative ideas for working with clay. In the first half of the term the group will research artists and ceramic techniques that interest you and learn about creative sketch booking as a design tool. To do this we will look in class at two prominent ceramic artists who work across mixed media and are famous for transferring their design styles across canvas, sketchbook and into three dimensional pieces. We will then explore how these methods of project development can be incorporated within your projects to inspire creative freedom. By the end of the half term you will be able to describe how it can be incorporated as well as identify the tools, studio safety and resources you will include in your final project.
In the second half we will build and complete our individual products with tutor led support.
By the end of the course you will have designed and crafted a final project, in doing so you will have developed a range of skills and techniques enabling you to build a strong clay structure, gaining a Level 1 qualification in the process.
This course is a Gateway Level 1 Award. You will receive guidance and support identifying and setting individual targets, feedback along your creative journey and support to achieve your aims
Where can it lead?
Once you have built up your confidence and skills the world of progression opens up to you. You can progress onto further accredited Pottery classes or even stretch your craft skills by enrolling onto other courses which interest you, learning new skills and gaining great highlights to add to your CV. New courses and skills give you interesting talking points and can show diverse interests and skills which all help when in an interview.
Progression routes to gateway qualifications are open to you once you have completed this course.
