Have you always fancied having a go at pottery? In that case you will love this course!
Our exciting course is aimed at encouraging beginners and budding enthusiasts to come and join in. You will gain experience of working with clay. This course will introduce you to basic techniques for working with clay, developing creative skills and enabling you to become a budding potter and gaining a qualification in the process!
To have an awareness of basic clay skills and techniques as well as basic IT skills, allowing you to access and use Google Classroom and research artists online.

With specialist support from an experienced potter, you’ll be introduced to throwing on the potter’s wheel. You’ll learn essential tips, skills and techniques for working with clay and how to apply decorating underglaze stains and glazes to help you achieve your creative goals.
You will be introduced to the basics of throwing, learning to centre the clay, making cylinders and bowls and learn hand-building skills by creating your own bespoke lantern for either the garden or home.
This course will take place in a dedicated, Covid-safe, ceramics studio that is well resourced, and offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the wonder that is clay! It is the perfect place to get started on a new skill or build on what you already know.
For those learners wishing to complete the Level 1 this course will also teach you how to develop a project of your own design from the design stage, through to developing your project, embellishing it during the decorative stages, firing and glazing.
You will produce your very own unique pots, which will be fired for you to keep.
This course is being offered at Entry 3 and Level 1. You will be required to attend an induction prior to the course starting where the tutor will establish your level. You will receive guidance and support identifying and setting individual targets, feedback along your creative journey and support to achieve your aims.
Where can it lead?
Once you have built up your confidence and skills the world of progression opens up to you with future progression on to Potter in the Making, Gateway Qualifications such as Creative Craft Level 1. You can progress on to accredited pottery classes or even stretch your craft skills by enrolling on to other courses which interest you, learning new skills and gaining great highlights to add to your CV. New courses and skills give you interesting talking points and can show diverse interests and skills which all help when in an interview.
This course could encourage you to help others in the pottery craft industry, provide creative support in the caring sector or to think about starting up a small business in the future.
