Course Content
We will take our inspiration from local history and the beautiful Avenues Fountains and we will learn how to create our very own sundial faces using slab building and hand building techniques.
We are celebrating 135 years of the Avenues Adult Education building and the many ways that it has served the community throughout the years. You will be encouraged to draw inspiration from the local environment, be it the building, The Avenues, and its architecture or even the beautiful fountains that once lived in Hull’s Botanical Gardens back when our building was being built! Get creative and come prepared with ideas and inspiration.
Your sundial will be made using a natural-coloured stoneware clay that once fired becomes a lovely light fawn stone colour perfect for outdoor use. The diameter of your sundial face will be no larger than 25cm due to the clay’s tolerance.
You will make your piece, with tutor guidance during the session using pre-hardened clay slabs. You will be able to decorate your piece using stencils where required for guidance etching and/or underglaze colours.
Your piece once completed will be fired unglazed to stoneware temperatures, producing a stony surface that is frost proof and durable. Your sundial will be yours to keep once fired and can be collected from the Avenues Adult Education reception the week commencing 26th June 2023.
Assessment Method
This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.
RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
Where can it lead?
You could progress on to further Community Learning courses and Vocational Qualifications.
As a Hull Training and Adult Education learner you have access to our Careers Advice Service. Our advisers are on hand to guide you through options and support you to achieve your full potential. Ask your tutor to refer you, if required.
