Course Aims
To develop participants’ skills, knowledge and confidence in their reading, writing and communication abilities, in order to gain accredited qualifications, improve employment options and progress on to higher levels of education. This course will be delivered over 10 weeks, 5 hours per week: 3 hours on site and 2 hours online through Google classrooms.
Entry Requirements
You are required to complete an initial assessment to show that you can work at the required level. You cannot achieved this level in this subject already (for example, if you have achieved Entry Level 3 Functional Skills previously, then you will need to progress to Level 1).

Course Content
English Functional Skills qualifications are broken down in to 3 areas of learning and assessment: reading, writing and speaking, listening and communication (SLC).
To include/brief overview:
- Reading: identifying purpose of texts, reading for detail and being able to compare information, ideas and opinions, recognising a range of layout and language features.
- Writing: using a range of formats, punctuation, grammar and spellings to create different types of texts suitable for a variety of audiences and purposes.
Speaking, Listening and Communication (SLC): developing communication skills in order to be able to actively listen, express own views appropriately and effectively prepare and contribute to discussions.
Assessment Method
There is one externally set/marked exam paper for reading and one for writing. There is also an assessment for SLC completed with the course tutor.
