Course Aims
Our ESOL courses cover all aspects of English, including:
- Speaking and listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Pronunciation
- Vocabulary and grammar
At Entry 3 you will work on improving your:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
- Spelling and punctuation skills
for everyday use in life and work.
You will learn how to use present, future and past tenses, how to write compound sentences correctly in letters, e-mails, articles and notes.
You will learn vocabulary for everyday situations e.g., friends and family, shops and shopping, health and health care, education and learning as well as free time activities and hobbies.
You will work on improving your reading skills so that you are able to read everyday texts by using a dictionary to identify and work out the meaning of words and phrases.
You will also improve your grammar skills by learning about:
- Present tenses
- Past simple
- Past continuous
- Present perfect
- Future tenses
- Modal verbs – should, will, may, might
- Conjunctions – and, but, as, because, so, although
- Relative pronouns

An Initial Assessment Session will be carried out before commencement of course to ensure you are studying at the correct level.

Course Content
Edexcel Functional Skills English
Entry 3 Speaking, Listening and Communicating
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Identify and extract relevant information and detail in straightforward explanations
- Make requests and ask concise questions using appropriate language in different contexts
- Communicate information and opinions clearly on a range of topics
- Respond appropriately to questions on a range of straightforward topics
- Follow and understand the main points of discussions
- Make relevant contributions to group discussions about straightforward topics
- Listen to and respond appropriately to other points of view, respecting conventions of turn-taking
Entry 3 Reading
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Read correctly words designated for Entry Level 3
- Identify, understand and extract the main points and ideas in and from texts
- Identify different purposes of straightforward texts
- Use effective strategies to find the meaning of words (e.g. a dictionary)
- working out meaning from context; using knowledge of different word types
- Understand organisational features and use them to locate relevant information (e.g. contents, index, menus, tabs and links)
Entry 3 Writing
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Use a range of punctuation correctly (e.g. full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas)
- Form irregular plurals
- Use mostly correct grammar (e.g. subject–verb agreement, consistent use of tense, definite and indefinite articles)
- Use the first, second and third place letters to sequence words in alphabetical order
- Spell correctly words designated for Entry Level 3
Assessment Method
To achieve this qualification, you will be required to take an exam
