Maths Functional Skills

Course overview
Most of our courses are delivered as a two hour session once a week. The classes are set so that people are all working at a similar level and are all taught by an experienced and qualified tutor. Your tutor will work with you to identify any skills gaps and these will be the focus of your learning. For maths, these are divided into working with numbers, handling data and measures and shapes. Typical areas that learners work on are in fractions, decimals and percentages, using graphs and converting measurements.

What happens in the classroom is only a small part of your learning. We will encourage you to develop independent learning skills with homework and online resources for you to use. Studying outside of the sessions is part of your commitment to your learning along with regular and punctual attendance at your class.

While you are on your course, you will have other learning opportunities to take advantage of. These could include things like community or enterprise projects, visits to cultural sites or workplaces and outside speakers like employers. You will also be able to access any support your need to further your work or study goals. This includes expert, independent careers advice and any specialist learning support you need to help you progress and achieve.

Who is this course for?
Maths Functional Skills courses are suitable for anyone who wants to improve their maths and to gain a qualification up to Level 2. It may be that you missed out on schooling or feel your skills are out of date. You may need a qualification to get a new or better job or to get on a course. Or it may be that you want to help your children or grandchildren with their learning.

This course can help with all of these. The first part of your course will be when you work with your tutor to identify what you need to work on, what your goals are, and how you will achieve those and by what date. Your tutor will plan your learning based on what you need to learn, not on a set course, so you will always be building on your skills towards your goals.

What can I do after the course?
Functional Skills qualifications are recognised by employers and universities and are a vital step in developing your career or for going on to further studies. Functional Skills qualifications are available at different levels to enable people to develop their skills and progress. Once you have achieved Level 2 you may want to go on to study GCSE Maths. Many jobs require maths qualifications.

You will discuss your career and learning goals with your tutor and you will be able to receive specialist advice and support on how to fulfil your ambitions.
