Course Aim

This course is for those with a sound knowledge in the subject who can complete tasks with only limited support required. We aim in this class to further our creative repertoire and be able to use our skills in a variety of situations by ‘Handbuilding’ a ceramics project and decorating it in a method of your own choice.

Entry Requirements

Must have a basic understanding of pottery techniques and have hand built ceramic projects previously.

Course Content

Increase your own self confidence by developing your ceramics project from design conception through to making and improvement. You will have technical support from the tutor during this time when required but be working independently where you feel confident.

During this five-week course we will cover:

  • Techniques and skills that will help you to hone your Handbuilding knowledge
  • Handbuilding the project
  • Use of the studio space, facilities and extensive materials
  • Explore different clay bodies and learn how they can be used to help you to achieve your design aims
  • Use of extensive ranges of stoneware glazes

Assessment Method

This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.

Where can it lead?

You may wish to progress on to one of our other pottery and ceramics courses or take a qualification. Such as:

Level 1 Award in Craft Skills using Natural Materials

Level 2 Certificate in Creative Crafts

These skills could be used in the following job roles:

  • Ceramics Designer
  • Kiln Operative
  • Own Business
