Course Content

This classroom based, workshop-style course aims to develop your knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to construct a garment using a commercial pattern.

You will learn practical sewing skills and techniques whilst working on a self-chosen project garment making suitable for your level of skill and ability.

Your project is your choice, you may wish to construct a simple skirt or top or undertake a more demanding construction.

The tutor will discuss your ideas with you at the first session.

During the course you will observe tutor demonstration and explanation of techniques and processes integral to garment construction.

Some of the areas covered:

  • Safety in the sewing room
  • Using the controls and functions on a sewing machine
  • How to use a commercial pattern
  • Understanding and using seam allowance, grainlines, pattern markings, neatening methods.
  • Construction techniques

You will provide your own pattern, fabric, threads, haberdashery and notions.

We have machines and some basic equipment available for you to use at the centre.  If you wish to bring your own sewing machinery and is more than 1 year old, it must hold a current PAT test certificate. The tutor will need to see evidence.

Assessment Method

This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
