Course Aims

This course is for those with a solid basic knowledge who feel confident in completing multi step tasks and activities. We aim in this class to further our creative repertoire by exploring the application of slips and engobes’ on the surface of a self-designed vessel.

Entry Requirements

Must have a basic understanding of pottery techniques and have hand-built ceramic projects before.

Learn practical clay/ceramic skills and techniques which will be embedded through a variety of pottery projects suitable for your level of skill and ability, by creating a ceramic project.

  • Designing your project
  • Techniques and skills that will help you to hone your hand-building knowledge
  • Applying engobes and underglazes
  • Explore different clay bodies and learn how they can be used to help you to achieve your design aims

Assessment Method

This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.

Where can it lead?

You may wish to progress on to one of our other pottery and ceramics courses or take a qualification such as:

Level 1 Award in Craft Skills using Natural Materials

Level 2 Certificate in Creative Crafts

These skills could be used in the following job roles:

  • Ceramics Designer
  • Kiln Operative
  • Own Business
