Course Aims

This course is for those with a good basic knowledge, who feel confident in completing multi-step tasks and activities on the pottery wheel. In this five-week course, we aim to further our throwing abilities by concentrating on scaling up the weights of clay that we can centre and successfully throw enabling us to confidently create taller vessels.

Entry Requirements

You must have a basic understanding of throwing techniques and be able to centre clay and draw up walls.

Course Content

Over the duration of four weeks, we will throw with larger weights of clay each session, enabling us to practically develop the skill and our own personal confidence in our throwing on the pottery wheel. On the 5th week we will glaze our work exploring surface texture and colour using functional food safe stoneware glazes.

You will:

  • Learn techniques and skills that will help you to hone your throwing knowledge
  • Learn to successfully maintain the clays centre of gravity when throwing on the wheel
  • Explore different clay bodies and learn how they can be used to help you to achieve your design aims

Assessment Method

This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.

Where can it lead?

You may wish to progress on to one of our other pottery and ceramics courses or take a qualification.  Such as:

Level 1 Award in Craft Skills using Natural Materials

Level 2 Certificate in Creative Crafts

These skills could be used in the following job roles:

  • Ceramics Designer
  • Kiln Operative
  • Own Business
