Increase Your Basic Pottery Skills – Induction

This course is for you if you have increased basic knowledge and are intending to work more independently. We will aim to gain confidence by making and decorating a coiled pottery project using coiling techniques over the course of five weeks.
You should have a basic knowledge and understanding of pottery skills.

You will learn practical clay handling skills and gain a basic understanding of the working hardness of clay by learning how to use the coiling technique to build a vase or planter. You will learn techniques such as slip and score, to join sections of clay together and using a template to inform our shapes. Once we have made our project, we will glaze it using a combination of stoneware glazes and underglazes.
During this five-week course we will cover:
- Basic clay handling
- Joining coils of clay together
- Basic hand building techniques
- Combining underglazes and engobes where applicable
- Exploring glazing techniques by practically decorating your work
This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.
RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
