Course Aims

If you would like to advance your practical skills in fashion design and construction, then the Level 2 Award in Textiles is for you!

It is a largely practical course which gives you the opportunity to develop and practise your creative skills required to progress in the Fashion sector.  The assignments covered focus on building a set of practical sewing skills, the use of sewing machines, pattern cutting and garment construction and well as developing creativity.

This course allows you to study on a part time basis, attending one three-hour session a week so it can be accommodated alongside employment, childcare and other commitments. It might be of particular interest if you are wanting a career change or just wanting to experience something different and enhance your practical and creative skills.

There is a greater level of challenge on this course and is suitable if you have achieved a Level 1 qualification or have some experience of fashion and garment construction.

Entry Requirements

You should have achieved a Level 1 qualification in fashion/sewing or related course or should have prior experience of garment construction.  You will also require a basic knowledge of written English as well as a commitment to achieving the qualification.

Course Content

The course is made up of three units and focuses on developing the necessary skills and knowledge to design and construct advanced fashion garments. You will be given practical tuition on the use of sewing machines and other equipment.

The projects on the course cover; exploring design ideas and sampling fashion techniques.  You will produce a portfolio which will support your progression at job interviews and/or further study.

You will benefit from teaching and guidance from experienced staff who have good links to the local creative industries and will benefit from learning skills to support employment in the fashion industry.

Assessment Method

Research and building a portfolio of practical samples as well as a producing a garment.

Development is progressive taking you through a series of practical workshops and assignments where you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the subject as well as your practical skills.

As well as practical samples, you will have to produce some written work, photographs during the developmental stages and written evaluations of your finished projects.

Where can it lead?

  • Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design (Fashion, Textiles & Design pathway)
  • Level 2 Apprenticeship in Textiles or Apparel

Or various career roles, such as:

  • Machinist in the fashion industry
  • Self-employed business in fashion/textiles
  • Pattern cutter
