Course Aims

This course is suitable if you want to build and increase your basic knowledge and are intending to work more independently.

You will gain confidence by making and decorating a coiled pottery project using coiling techniques over the course of five weeks.

Entry Requirements

You need to have completed the Beginners 1 course and/or have basic skills with clay.

Course Content

Over this five-week course you will learn practical clay handling skills and gain a basic understanding of the working hardness of clay by learning how to use the coiling technique to build a vase or planter.

You will learn clay handling techniques such as slip and score to join sections of clay together and use a template to inform your shapes. Once you have made your project, you will glaze it using a combination of stoneware glazes and underglazes.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Basic clay handling
  • Joining coils of clay together
  • Basic hand building techniques
  • Combining underglazes and engobes where applicable
  • Exploring glazing techniques by practically decorating your work

Assessment Method

This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
