Course Content

You will develop your own self confidence by learning how to throw on batts, enabling true creative independence, building up skills and confidence to throw without tutor assistance. You will have technical support from the tutor during this time when required but will be working independently where you feel confident to make a set project on the wheel within a specified time frame.

The intended outcome of this exercise is to enable you to be able to throw larger more intricate projects and understand how to balance the weight of the clay in the base to reduce the risks of thermal stress/ s cracks in larger projects. Should you wish to begin selling work this five-week course aims to build your confidence and independence.

During this five-week course we will cover:

  • Techniques and skills that will help you to hone your knowledge of throwing larger projects
  • Centring on a Batt
  • Creating plates and larger bowls practicing throwing the same shape using light stoneware, buff stoneware, and porcelain
  • Where you can source resources and ceramic materials for you to make ware independently
  • Health and safety measures when handling these materials
  • Explore different clay bodies over the 5 weeks and learn how a glaze reacts with it, evaluating how the differences can be utilised to achieve your personal design aims
  • Use of the studio space, facilities, and extensive materials
