Course Aims

The aim of this workshop is to gain confidence by having the opportunity to learn how to fire and load Raku Kilns, apply glazes with pre-hardened pots, and safely fire and purge your work.

Course Content

This workshop will give you a hands-on opportunity to learn:

  • The history of Raku
  • How to safely use the Raku kilns
  • How to apply glazes to the pottery
  • How to safely load the Raku kilns
  • How to smoke the work and purge the reduction bins
  • How to wash the work

At the end of the session, you will have your own tea beakers to take home.

Assessment Method

This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.

Where can it lead?

You may wish to progress on to one of our other pottery and ceramics courses or take a qualification. Such as:

  • Basic Pottery Skills – short course
  • Basic Throwing on a Pottery Wheel – short course

These skills could be used in the following job roles:

  • Ceramics Designer
  • Kiln Operative
  • Own Business
