Course Aims
This classroom-based course will develop your knowledge and understanding of sewing techniques for dressmaking, crafts or soft furnishings progress your practical skills in hand and machine sewing and provide tips to guide you.

Course Content
You will learn practical sewing skills and techniques which will be embedded through a variety sewing projects suitable for your level of skill and ability. You will create a number of simple sewn pieces
During the course you will observe tutor demonstrations of the methods and processes implemented in the projects you will create, including both hand and machine sewing techniques.
The course content will be negotiated to meet your needs and will include some of the following:
- Hand sewing skills;
- Basic sewing machine skills;
- Basic over locker machine skills to neaten seams;
- Sewing techniques such as inserting zips, piping seams etc.;
- Construction process to create sewn items such as bags, cushions and simple garments:
- Techniques and methods requested by learners.
Where can it lead?
After this course you may wish to advance to an accredited course in order to gain a qualification in the subject.
In terms of employment, you may use your transferrable knowledge and practical skills in jobs such as:
- Seamstress
- Self – employed creating individual handmade pieces
- Machinist
- Designer
- Pattern Cutter
- Buyer

Repairing clothing/textile items
- Replacing buttons/zips
- Mending tears
Garment alteration
- Altering hem length
- Shortening sleeves
- Altering the size
Clothing manufacture
- Working for a large/small concern
- Making garments to sell yourself online or at craft fairs/pop up shops
- Making dance/theatre costumes
- Upcycling garments for resale
Soft furnishing manufacture
- Working for a large/small concern
- Working at home making curtains/cushions/soft furnishings to sell yourself online or at craft fairs/pop up shops
Accessories manufacture
- Working at home making bags/scarves/wraps to sell yourself online or at craft fairs/pop up shops
Working in the voluntary sector
- Repairing and altering garments/textile items for resale
- Upcycling garments for resale
