Course Aims
This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of the controls and functions of the sewing machine; key machine sewing techniques, progress your practical skills and provide tips to guide you.
Entry Requirements
No formal entry requirements, however some prior knowledge and experience of using a sewing machine would be advantageous.
Course content
You will learn to use the sewing machine competently, develop practical skills and understanding of a range of techniques and processes which will be embedded through the creation of simple sewn items.
During the course you will observe tutor demonstrations of the methods, techniques and processes implemented in the projects you will undertake.
The course content will include some of the following:
- Controls and functions of the sewing machine
- Machine stitches
- Seam allowance
- Neatening seams
- Insert a simple zip
- Construction process to create simple sewn items.
Where can it lead?
This course will furnish you with basic machine sewing skills and allow you to have a firm foundation from which to further develop your knowledge, understanding and practical ability.
After this course you may wish to enrol on a Leisure sewing course, and eventually on to an accredited course in order to gain a qualification in the subject.
In terms of employment, you may use your skills in jobs such as:
Repairing clothing/textile items
- Mending tears
Garment alteration
- Altering hem length
- Shortening sleeves
Accessories manufacture
- Working at home making very simple items to sell yourself online or at craft fairs/pop up shops
working in the voluntary sector
- Repairing and altering garments/textile items for resale
