What is the course about?
You will learn practical sewing skills and techniques while creating and developing your work using a variety of materials.
During the course, you will observe tutor demonstrations linked to the projects you will create and develop, including learning both hand and machine sewing techniques.
The course content will be negotiated to meet your needs and will include some of the following:
- Hand sewing skills;
- Basic sewing machine skills;
- Basic over locker machine skills to neaten seams;
- Sewing techniques such as inserting zips, piping seams etc.;
- Construction process to create sewn items such as bags, cushions and simple garments.
What do we expect from you?
You will be required to attend an induction to establish your current level of skills and knowledge. At the induction session you can talk to the tutor about your projects and will be advised about the equipment you will require prior to the start of each course.
You will need the following equipment: a basic sewing kit (scissors, pins, hand sewing needles and a tape measure), fabric, threads and patterns required for your individual sewing project. The centre has sewing machines, over lockers and some equipment, though you can bring your own sewing machine.
Regular attendance is essential for progression to a higher level and you will be encouraged to practise techniques at home.
Recognising and recording your progress and achievement
As with all learning it is important for you to know how you are progressing.
Your learning on this course will be recorded through the individual learning goals that you agree and set with your tutor at the beginning of each course.
This will allow you to see, as you work towards those learning goals, how well you are learning, what you have achieved, and how you have progressed during the course.
You may also discuss what you would like to progress on to after the course to further your learning or career.
