Course Content
During this course you will use a commercial pattern to cut out and construct a garment in knit/stretch fabric.
Each week you will explore an aspect of construction using the overlocker. To practice the new techniques and processes you will create samples.
Some of the overlocker topics covered are:
- Overlocker basics – safety, controls, settings and functions, needle types, stitching
- Change threads – a simple way!
- Rethreading – starting with a naked machine, following the threading guide to replace threads from scratch!
- Overlocker techniques such as rolled hem, flatlock as required
- Sewing with jersey/knit fabrics – techniques for using the overlocker to construct stretch garments
This is a classroom-based, workshop-style, learning experience.
Tutor demonstration, advice, guidance, and practical support will be given throughout the session.
If you have your own sewing tools, scissors, pins, etc please bring them with you. If you wish to bring your own overlocker or sewing machinery, it must hold a current PAT test.
You must bring your own resources.
You will need:
- A commercial pattern for a stretch/knit garment – T-shirt, dress, leggings etc

Your tutor will discuss resource amounts and requirements with you at induction.

Assessment Method
This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.
RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
Where can it lead?
You could progress on to further crafting, sewing and pottery/ceramics courses.
As a Hull Training and Adult Education learner, you have access to our Careers Advice Service. Our advisers are on hand to guide you through options and support you to achieve your full potential. Ask your tutor to refer you, if required.
