Course Aims

This course will develop knowledge and understanding of sewing techniques and processes; how to use sewing equipment and machinery, fabrics and haberdashery, decorative techniques, sequential.  You will follow step by step construction methods to create a sewn memory item and provide a space to relax and share some conversation and thoughts around methods of improving wellbeing whilst creating simple hand sewn items.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for learners with some prior knowledge and practical experience of the subject who wish to further develop their skills and understanding.

Course Content

This blended course comprising of classroom-based workshop-style learning with some online content will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills.

You will learn practical sewing skills and techniques whilst working on a self-chosen sewing project of your own design. The tutor will discuss your ideas with you at induction.

During the course you will observe tutor demonstrations of the methods and processes implemented in the projects that you will create, including both hand and machine sewing techniques.

Some of the areas covered:

  • Hand sewing techniques
  • Sewing machine skills
  • Simple decorative techniques
  • Construction processes

Assessment Method

This course uses RARPA as its method of assessment.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.

Where can it lead?

After this course you may wish to advance to a sewing course delivering the next level of skills, and eventually on to an accredited sewing and textile course.
