Course Content

This is a classroom-based, workshop-style, learning experience where you will build upon and consolidate your prior knowledge by working on a self-chosen, individual textile project which will grow your skills step by step.

During the course, you will observe tutor demonstrations and explanations of techniques and processes that support and meet individual needs.

Some of the areas covered may include:

  • Overlocker Skills – decorative stitches, change threads
  • Sewing machine skills
  • Sewing techniques
  • Construction processes, techniques, and methods requested by learners

Tutor demonstration, advice, guidance, and practical support will be given throughout the session.

You will need to bring with you some fabric, threads, and haberdashery.

There are sewing machines and some sewing equipment for your use at the centre, scissors, pins, etc.  However, you may wish to bring your own sewing tools and equipment.

If you wish to bring your own sewing machinery and is more than 1 year old, it must hold a current PAT test certificate.  The tutor will need to see evidence.

Assessment Method

This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.

Where can it lead?

You could progress on to further crafting, sewing and pottery/ceramics courses.

As a Hull Training and Adult Education learner, you have access to our Careers Advice Service. Our advisers are on hand to guide you through options and support you to achieve your full potential. Ask your tutor to refer you, if required.
