Course Aims
You will explore and experience the wonder of Raku, develop projects that will be fired using glazes and horsehair in the Raku kilns achieving and Entry Level 2 qualification by the end of the course.
Entry Requirements
This course is suitable for those with little/very basic hand building knowledge and no other craft qualifications who wish to develop new skills. This is an ideal progression course from a non-qualification course.

Course Content
This course aims to develop your Raku hand building skills and firing knowledge gaining a qualification as a result.
During this six-week course you will cover the following:
Week 1 – Studio and equipment, Health & Safety induction, introduction to the wonder of Raku and make a pinch pot
Week 2 – Learn how to create clay tiles using craft equipment, with a group discussion on the horsehair technique
Week 3 – Create a hand built ceramics piece learning how to create optimal work for the Raku process
Week 4 – Completing the project with refinement and decoration techniques including applying terra-sigulatta
Week 5 – Learning how to apply raku glazes and about the theory and history of Raku firing, including how to clean up your work and when and how to apply Kintsugi demonstration
Week 6 – Raku day including the horsehair technique. This is an outdoor session, outdoor boots and shoes, no trailing clothes and hair tied back. Project completion and final finishes

Where can it lead?
This course is intended to help learners to develop personal confidence with progression opportunities to Entry Level 3.
