Course Aims
If you have completed the Hand Building Clay Skills – Beginners 1 course or have a basic understanding of creating straightforward pottery objects, then this is the course for you.
During this 10-week course you will gain confidence by making and decorating a pottery project using slab building techniques.
Entry Requirements
You should have completed the Hand Building for Beginners 1 course or can demonstrate basic ceramic skills. Your level will be identified at induction.

Course Content
You will build on your previous knowledge and practical skills in hand building with clay.
You will learn practical clay handling skills and gain a basic understanding of the working hardness of clay by learning how to slab build. You will learn clay handling techniques such as slip and score to join sections of clay together and incising clay. Once you have made your project, you will glaze it using a combination of stoneware glazes and underglazes.
During the 10-week course we will cover:
- Basic clay handling
- Joining pre-hardened clay slabs together
- Basic hand building techniques
- How to apply underglazes
- Exploring glazing techniques by practically decorating your work
Assessment Method
This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.
RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
