Course Aims

If you have an increased basic knowledge and are intending to work more independently, then this course is for you. You will gain confidence by making and decorating a coiled pottery project using coiling techniques over the course of six weeks.

Course Content

During this six-week course you will learn practical clay handling skills and a basic understanding of the working hardness of clay by learning how to use the coiling technique to build a vase or planter. You will learn clay handling techniques such as slip and score to join sections of clay together and use a template to inform your shapes. Once you have made your project, you will glaze it using a combination of stoneware glazes and underglazes.

  • Basic clay handling
  • Joining coils of clay together
  • Basic hand building techniques
  • Combining underglazes and engobes where applicable.
  • Exploring glazing techniques by practically decorating your work

Assessment Method

This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
